Just as some background information, this is the second time that this has happened to me in the last six months. I fixed it the first time, but it was so long ago that I forget how. My Windows machine updated last night as I shut it down, but when I went to boot it up this morning nothing happened. The computer turns on and then shows a blinking white dash in the top left of the screen.
I never reach the login screen so I cannot try booting into safe mode or anything like that. My belief is that windows Update did not update fully again and as a result I am missing some core Windows file that is needed to boot.
I have the repair tool installed on a flash drive, which is how I am running the below commands. I also tried the repair, restore, and recover options from the Windows Media GUI, but none of those worked either. I have fixed this once, so I believe it can be fixed again without losing any data.
Slightly aggravating that this has happened yet again, but hoping I can receive some help in order to come to a solution. Thanks, Jim. I am somewhat unsure as to why this process fully worked. It is extremely frustrating to have to spend 30 or so hours fixing something that should never be an issue in the first place. Please look into these issues and come up with a solution so that users do not have to reformat their boot drive and waste extreme amounts of time like I had to.
